Why I am a Champion for this Cause
I believe in the mission of the Ithaca Health Alliance to facilitate access to health care for all.
When I moved to Ithaca in 2010, I was a new mom, unemployed and concerned with maintaining affordable health insurance for my family. I first learned about the Ithaca Health Alliance through the Ithaca Free Clinic. Pre-employment physicals offered at the clinic give uninsured individuals access to secure a new job, who would not otherwise be able to afford a doctor visit for a physical examination. These physicals and many other healthcare and holistic services are provided at the clinic free of charge by 100% PROVIDER VOLUNTEERS who give generously of their time and talent. For services not offered at the clinic, the Alliance provides referrals to healthcare providers in the community, and may be able to help cover direct expenses for urgent needs such as a broken bone or dental extractions.
The majority of people depending on the safety net provided by the Clinic are employed, but still do not have access to affordable health care. In the last two years, the Alliance had unexpected cuts from several major funding sources, yet the demand for Clinic services has grown faster than ever. Just this past June the Clinic served a record-breaking number of patients and provided 320 visits, a 150% increase from the 2011-2012 monthly average. Your donation will help continue to safeguard the health of over 1,300 area residents.
It brings me incredible peace of mind to know that if my husband and I lost our health insurance coverage, there is a community option available to help us fill the gap. I am privileged to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ithaca Health Alliance.
